I’ve always relied on wallet apps and UPI for almost every transaction—fast, convenient, and always available. But recently, I got curious about whether gift cards could actually replace wallet apps for everyday spending. So I decided to test it out using GyFTR.

For a couple of weeks, I tried using gift cards for things I regularly spend on—food delivery, online shopping, and a few subscriptions. Instead of paying directly through UPI or a wallet, I’d quickly buy a gift card for the exact amount and use that at checkout.

The experience was smoother than I expected. It didn’t feel like a complicated extra step, especially once I got used to it. In fact, for planned purchases, it worked really well. I knew exactly how much I was spending, which made me more mindful compared to the usual “tap and pay” habit.

That said, I wouldn’t say gift cards can completely replace wallet apps. Wallets are still more practical for spontaneous or smaller payments. But for intentional spending—where you already know the brand or platform gift cards are a surprisingly good alternative.

Overall, I see it less as a replacement and more as a complement. If used smartly, gift cards can add a layer of control and even a bit of value to your regular spending without disrupting your routine too much.
