Everyone uses ChataGPT, or at least billions of people do. It’s enough that bloggers and business owners alike want to know how to get AI engines to cite them as a source or use their material as reference.

(Leave alone the fact about AI engines being giant plagiarism machines. That’s another issue and a separate one, though it is valid.)

Be that as it may, many business owners and content creators are hot to get AI engines to use them so that they can learn more about answer engine optimization so they can dub themselves experts in their respective fields (or just generate more sales).

This short post will break down the details of how to get featured in or cited by an answer engine in its generative outputs.

1.  Pick a topic in which you are experienced

The first thing is to recognize that you know more about some things than others. This is good news for content creators because authority is one of the biggest elements in getting “picked” by an AI engine as a source.

2.  Find a long tail keyword

Short tail keywords are not the prize here. Find long tail keywords, and preferably, several of them, on which you will focus in your content.

3. Find queries featuring that long tail keyword and others that are related

What you need to do is find like 10-15 good queries that contain the first long tail keyword you found, and for which you want to be cited by AI. You will want to answer these to be considered an authority.

4. Draft a post to be used as a blog or a CMS page

Next is the hardest part of this whole mission. You will want to draft copy that’s going to be used as a blog, an article, or an evergreen CMS page. It doesn’t have to be 5000 words, but it should comprehensively answer all the questions you’ve picked out.

5.  Answer more than one question in the post

Don’t just draft a post that answers one question. Answer at least the 10-15 that you picked out, and any others that you think are relevant to them.

6.  Don’t get too technical

With AI, the main “ranking signal” (to use that term) is content. Don’t worry too much about technical website aspects. If it performs well for conventional SEO, it’ll work fine for AI.

7.  Be sparing with outbound links.

AI, like search engines, likes well-researched content, but you don’t need to go crazy with outbound links, as they have the potential to distribute authority away from your post.

8.  Publish it

Once you’ve drafted your material, make sure it’s live on your website and that it gets indexed.

9.   Wait

This is the easiest step on this list. Just like SEO, AI SEO takes time.

10.  If it didn’t work, try again

You should, for some queries, start to see your page (or website) get cited by AI in generative outputs. Test this by asking AI questions relevant to the page you published and see if it comes up. If you can’t find it after a month or two, repeat the process detailed here.
