PoE 2 The Aberration Boss Guide: Location, Mechanics and Rewards
With the release of Patch 0.5.0: Return of the Ancients, Path of Exile 2 introduces one of its most punishing endgame challenges yet: The Aberration. Born from a grotesque fusion of a corrupted arthropod and a crashing Verisium meteor, this massive, insectoid nightmare serves as a top-tier Expedition Pinnacle Boss. If you are pushing deep into the endgame and looking to secure some of the strongest build-defining uniques in the game, you will need to prepare for this fight.
This guide breaks down exactly how to find The Aberration, how to handle its chaotic combat mechanics, and what rewards await you upon its defeat.
Location & How to Access
The Aberration awaits players within the Ruins of Kingsmarch, a high-tier endgame instance with an Area Level of 79+. Stepping into this arena requires completing a specific chain of endgame Expedition activities:
-
The Prerequisite: Your journey begins by actively tracking down and interacting with the Expedition league mechanic inside your maps.
-
Defeating the Stardrinker: You must first locate and defeat Uhtred, the Stardrinker. Overcoming this encounter grants you a crucial drop: Olroth’s Logbook.
-
Mapping the Ruins: Take Olroth's Logbook to your map device. Using it allows you to plan routes, map out the expedition, and finally open portals into the Ruins of Kingsmarch to challenge The Aberration.
Boss Mechanics & Phases
The Aberration relies on a brutal mixture of sweeping physical strikes, relentless tracking lasers, and overwhelming visual effects. Success in this arena comes down to maintaining a steady movement rhythm and knowing when to pause your damage output to focus purely on positioning.
Phase 1: The Comet Impact
The encounter opens with the boss utilizing its massive frame and meteoric power to bully you out of the center of the arena.
-
Melee Slashes & Swings: The Aberration heavily pressures players with rapid, sweeping sword and claw attacks. For ranged builds, keeping a safe distance is your top priority. If you are playing a melee build, you must time your dodge rolls carefully to roll through the swings rather than away from them.
-
Ice Beam / Tracking Lasers: The boss will channel a sustained, elemental energy beam that locks onto your position. This laser tracks surprisingly fast. To outpace it, you must run in a continuous, tight circle around the boss; trying to run away in a straight line will usually get you caught.
-
Comet Rain: To break your circular movement pattern, large celestial projectiles will rain down onto the arena floor. Watch for the circular ground markers and make micro-adjustments to stay out of the impact zones.
Phase 2: Curving Ground Eruptions
Once you push the boss past its first health threshold, its attacks become significantly more erratic and difficult to predict.
-
Following Ground Fissures: The Aberration violently slams the ground, sending out wave-like fissures. Unlike typical linear projectiles, these fissures curve mid-travel to track your movements. To escape them, do not dash backward—instead, dash or leap perpendicularly to the projectile's path to break its tracking angle.
-
Overlapping Hazards: The real danger in Phase 2 is overlap. The boss will seamlessly chain tracking fissures while maintaining its sweeping melee attacks. Do not get greedy with your DPS windows here; prioritize survival and evasion over everything else.
Phase 3: The Spider Web Final Phase
The final phase is a pure execution and DPS check, often referred to by players as the "Spider Web" arena panic.
-
Visual Chaos: The Aberration floods the entire screen with an immense volume of spell effects, particles, and stray projectiles. It is easy to lose track of your character in the clutter.
-
Survival Strategy: Do not panic or blindly run to the outer edges of the room. Stand primarily near the center of the arena, but position yourself away from the direct face of the spider to avoid instant-kill slam mechanics.
-
Aggressive Management: Aggressively cycle your health potions during this final stretch. The arena floor will gradually become completely covered in deadly hazards, meaning you need to focus entirely on burning down the boss's remaining health before you run out of safe ground to stand on.
Rewards & Notable Loot
Conquering this insectoid nightmare rewards you with highly coveted endgame crafting assets and powerful Unique items that can completely redefine your character build:
-
Starlit Ore: The primary exclusive drop from the encounter. Taking this rare material to the Verisium Anvil allows you to forge high-tier, item level 84 Unique items.
-
Eyes of the Runefather (Venerable Defender Shield): A powerful endgame shield that grants the active Raise Shield skill. It inflicts Runefather's Challenge on enemies directly in front of you while providing substantial boosts to Armor, Evasion, and Cold Resistance.
-
The Unleashed (Revered Vestments): A premium defensive body armor option that significantly boosts your maximum elemental resistances, armor, and energy shield. It allows you to build up Runic Binding charges during combat, which can be spent to unleash Unbound Potential.
-
Twisted Empyrean (Aberrant Sledge): A unique mace that grants Level 16 Starborn Onslaught. This weapon adds massive amounts of flat cold damage that scales directly with your character's maximum Mana pool, making it a perfect fit for mana-stacking archetypes.
