mmoexp - AiON 2: Global Launch Insights for Western Gamers
With AiON 2 scheduled for a global release in Q3 2026, many players are asking the same questions: What kind of game will it be in the West, and is it worth the investment of time? Having played AiON 2 daily since its release in Taiwan and Korea, exploring multiple classes and completing nearly all available content, I've had the chance to observe how the game has evolved over the past three months.
Content and Progression
Aion 2 Kinah is a PvPvE MMO with a strong focus on PvE, featuring a mix of solo and group dungeons, 8-man raids, world bosses, mini-games, crafting, and daily activities. Gear progression primarily revolves around conquest dungeons, which come in normal and hard difficulties. Hard dungeons introduce additional mechanics and offer higher chances of rare equipment. Some dungeons, like Ascension TR and Dreon, rotate layouts weekly to reduce repetitiveness.
The 8-man raid features three boss encounters, with the final boss, Ludra, offering a challenge comparable to traditional MMOs. Developers are already adjusting dungeon designs to increase base difficulty and offer more meaningful rewards, addressing early concerns about content challenge.
AiON 2 also includes quality-of-life improvements like "pity mechanics" for guaranteed gear after a number of dungeon runs, weapon change vouchers, and cross-character pet systems that reduce repetitive grinding. The pet system itself grants incremental stats and progression through soul collection, leveling, and the genus system.
Monetization and Pay-to-Win Concerns
Monetization has been a controversial topic, particularly due to AiON 2's dual subscriptions, battle passes, and currency exchange system. While subscriptions and battle passes are not inherently problematic, the premium currency exchange system allows players to convert Kuna to the in-game gold, Kina, which accelerates progression.
Most high-end PvE gear comes from crafting rather than dungeon drops, which can create a sense of imbalance. Systems like stat re-rolling and mana stone socketing introduce RNG-heavy loops, though recent updates—such as stat transfer systems and free stat rerolls—have reduced player frustration. Overall, AiON 2 fits into a "pay-to-skip" model rather than outright pay-to-win. Free-to-play players can remain competitive, but some investment in time or resources is necessary to stay up to speed.
PvP: Progress and Challenges
PvP is available through arenas, battlegrounds, the Abyss, and open-world rifting. Early balance issues led to very low time-to-kill scenarios, but adjustments to stats, defensive values, and skill tweaks have improved encounters. Class balance remains a work in progress, especially in the Abyss, which favors ranged classes.
Rifting has also seen changes, including flag-based systems and rewards, but open-world PvP still lacks sufficient incentive compared to earlier iterations. Other concerns include render distance limitations and a UI that can make tracking buffs, debuffs, and enemy classes challenging during large-scale encounters.
The Verdict
Despite some monetization and progression system issues, AiON 2 offers a rich MMO experience with strong visuals, an excellent soundtrack, fast and impactful combat, and a variety of content that feels rewarding. It is not a genre-defining MMO, but it represents one of the most successful cross-platform PC and mobile MMO efforts to date.
Areas still needing improvement include:
Monetization adjustments for the global release
Further balance and incentives in PvP, especially rifting
UI improvements and render distance optimization for large-scale encounters
Refinements to progression systems and RNG loops
For MMO enthusiasts,Aion 2 Items is a game worth watching. With three months of steady development and active adjustments, it shows promise as a long-term title rather than a fleeting release.
The global launch in Q3 2026 will reveal whether the game can capture Western players' attention, but early signs suggest it has the foundation to succeed.
