Pakistani Architecture & Design: The New Wave | PakistaniArt

Pakistan's built environment is a palimpsest — Mughal monuments, colonial brick, brutalist concrete and now a wave of speculative glass, all layered on top of each other in the same city blocks.

The design culture that responds to all this is finally getting attention.

The inheritance

Start with the legacy and you start strong: Lahore Fort, Badshahi Mosque, the Wazir Khan Mosque, the Sindhi tombs of Makli. Pakistan sits on one of the world's richest architectural traditions, and it's not a museum piece — it's still standing, still used.

Colonial and early-modern architecture adds a second layer, from Karachi's old commercial core to Lahore's British-era boulevards.

The new generation

A fresh cohort of architects is working between tradition and the present. Some do careful adaptive reuse — turning old havelis and warehouses into galleries, cafés and offices. Others push contemporary form, using climate and light the way the old builders used jharokas and courtyards.

The best of it is modest, considered, and deeply local. The worst is the usual developer-driven glass box, which is less a design choice than an accounting one.

Design beyond buildings

The design field has widened past architecture. Graphic designers now shape brand identities with real craft. Interior designers have made Pakistani homes and hospitality a serious specialty. Product and furniture design are small but growing.

This broader design culture matters, because it's what makes a city feel considered rather than merely constructed.

The conservation fight

Heritage conservation is the field's permanent, losing battle — one building saved for every several lost. But the losses have a way of sharpening the debate, and public awareness of heritage value is higher than it's ever been.

Every saved haveli becomes a small proof of concept that conservation can pay for itself.

Seeing the whole field

Architecture and design coverage in Pakistan used to be scattered across trade press and weekend supplements.

PakistaniArt now covers Pakistani design and architecture as a single, ongoing beat — profiling the architects, the designers, and the buildings that matter. It's where the built environment finally gets the attention the painting always had.
